Mental Health Coverage and Parity

Based on federal law, insurance plan coverage for mental health and substance abuse cannot be more restrictive than coverage for physical health. This is known as mental health parity.

Click here to view warning signs a plan may not meet parity requirements.

If you have a parity question or complaint regarding your coverage, click here to access the Health & Human Services (HHS) Consumer Portal for assistance.

What are you entitled to see? Click here to view the Consumer Guide to Disclosure Right which includes what documents your insurance company is required to provide you if asked.

Find a Psychiatrist

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) maintains a searchable database of psychiatrists, including those in the New York City area. Click here to view the database and search for a psychiatrist in your area. You will be able to view information such as specialty, office location, phone numbers, and more!

Please note: NYCPS does NOT schedule patient appointments and we do not have information about which insurance is accepted by individual psychiatrists. You may use insurance as a search criteria in the Find a Psychiatrist feature above, however, please call individual psychiatrists to confirm or inquire about insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid.

If you, or a loved one, are experiencing an emergency, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.
