Dismantling Racism: Building Anti-Racist Psychiatrists Series
Is Racism a Mental Illness?

This event is part of our series, Dismantling Racism: Building Anti-Racist Psychiatrists, helping to bring awareness, education, reflection, and empathy to build a community of anti-racist psychiatrists.

Join a discussion on racism as a problematic subtype of narcissism and its clinical presentation. Our discussion will be led by April Harter, LCSW, a therapist and mentor for narcissists in recovery, host of the podcast Truth Warriors, and author of Narcissism Redefined (2024).

We intend for this to be a safe space to collectively share our complex thoughts and emotions surrounding these topics and brainstorm ways we can come together to support each other, colleagues, patients, and the community at large. We hope to see you there!

April Dawn Harter is a licensed clinical social worker that offers mentorship and therapy to narcissists in recovery. She works with all narcissists along the spectrum, whether it be mild, moderate, or severe narcissism. She is writing her first book, Narcissism Redefined (2024), where she redefines narcissism as an addiction to dissociation. At the same time that she is writing her first book, she is also writing her second book, Narcissism Recovery (2026). The first book introduces the concept of narcissism as an addiction to dissociation, while the second book helps the reader learn what it takes to recover from narcissism. April considers herself a narcissist in recovery who guides others on how to succeed in recovery work. This work requires a lot of emotional labor. It is exceptionally hard, but not impossible.
