Monday, December 08, 2025, 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM EST
Category: Events
Please email [email protected] if you would like to join the NYCPS Integrative Psychiatry Committee, who has partnered with the APA Integrative Psychiatry Caucus for a Talk Series on Metabolic Psychiatry with Dr. Beata Bliss Lewis, MD, Dec 8, Jan 12, Feb 9, (Monday evenings, 8 to 9:30 pm EST), and Mar 10 (Tuesday evening, 8 - 9:30 pm EST) Virtual via Zoom. December 8th: Part 1 - "Metabolic Psychiatry: Addressing the Root Causes of Mental Illness" We'll explore the metabolic foundations of mental illness, focusing on inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction as key drivers of psychiatric symptoms. January 12th: Part 2 - “Metabolic Psychiatry: Food and Fasting for Brain Health" - We'll explore how dietary approaches (keto, paleo, low carb, anti-inflammatory) and fasting protocols improve mitochondrial function, reduce neuroinflammation, and address mental health at its metabolic roots. We'll discuss the mechanisms, evidence, and practical strategies for using nutrition as medicine in psychiatric care. February 9th: Part 3 - "Metabolic Psychiatry: Movement, Sleep, and Light for Brain Energy" We'll dive into how movement, sleep, and light exposure work at the cellular level to support brain energy and mental health. We'll talk about how exercise creates new mitochondria in the brain, boosts BDNF and neuroplasticity, and improves how our neurons produce energy. We'll cover why sleep is essential for mitochondrial repair and metabolic homeostasis, and what happens when sleep is disrupted. And we'll explore how light exposure, activity timing, and circadian rhythm alignment reduce inflammation, optimize mitochondrial function, and protect against neurodegeneration. We'll also discuss practical approaches for working with patients on these lifestyle interventions. These talks are designed to be interactive conversations. Join to engage, ask questions, share ideas, and learn together. Cameras on are welcome and encouraged.
