Forensic Careers

Join the NYCPS Resident and Forensic Committees for an in-person career panel looking at the many exciting opportunities within forensic psychiatry! Our guests include experts in the fields of child forensics, correctional work, private practice, and inpatient forensics. We will discuss their path into forensic psychiatry, the most exciting parts of their job, along with unique challenges faced when working with the legal system and complex forensic patients. Additionally, we will provide an overview of the fellowship application process, student electives, and opportunities for more exposure to the field.

Speakers:

Oliver Harper, MD trained in general psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical Center, child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU/Bellevue, and forensic psychiatry at Columbia University. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU, and lectures in the combined New York City forensic psychiatry fellowship didactics. He works as an attending psychiatrist at the Manhattan Forensic Psychiatric Evaluation Court Clinic, and maintains a private practice in adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry.

Catherine Mier, MD is currently Bellevue Forensic Psychiatry Inpatient Director and Assistant Director of the New York University Forensic Psychiatry fellowship program. Dr. Mier attended medical school at University of Kentucky School of Medicine, and later went on to complete her psychiatry residency at University of Louisville School of Medicine. She completed her forensic psychiatry fellowship at New York University and has worked as an attending at the Bellevue inpatient forensic unit since completing training. 

Joseph Otonichar, DO, is currently Medical Director of Mental Health at NYC Health and Hospitals Correctional Health Services where he helps oversee the provision of psychiatric care in the nation’s second largest jail system at Rikers Island. Dr. Otonichar started working with Correctional Health after completion of his forensic psychiatry fellowship at New York University in 2017. He also performs forensic psychiatric assessments as a partner of Gotham Forensics, LLC, and has a small clinical private practice in which he provides direct patient care outside of the jail setting.

Frank Tedeschi, MS, MDcompleted his training in adult psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine, where he also subsequently completed fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry.  His primary interest is the intersection between adolescent and forensic psychiatry.  He is currently the Senior Psychiatrist at the Robert N. Davoren Center, which is the facility that houses the majority of young adult male detainees on Rikers Island.  He was previously the Medical Director of the Bellevue Juvenile Justice Mental Health Service from 2014 to 2021, which provides mental health care to the juvenile detention facilities of New York City.  He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the NYU School of Medicine Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. 

Saranyan Senthelal, MD is a PGY-3 psychiatry resident at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Elmhurst Hospital). A native of Toronto, Canada; Dr. Senthelal studied Biomedical Sciences at the University of Guelph prior to earning his medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine. Dr. Senthelal is the resident/fellow chairperson of Queens County Psychiatric Association and an active member of the NYCPS Forensic Committee. He has a strong interest in forensic psychiatry and is excited to further educate co-residents across New York City about the subspecialty.
